Foundry Metallurgist
Ajax Foundry located Silverwater NSW
Ajax Foundry Pty Limited is Australian private manufacturing company producing ferrous castings for automotive and construction industries, mining industry, railways, and engineering components.
We are now seeking a FOUNDRY METALLURGIST
Responsibilities include:
- Ensure molten metal is in specification and the jobs being produced
- Ensure chemical analysis and other product data are being recorded and filed correctly.
- Ensure test bars are cast as required by customers, including testing
- Issue customer test certificates.
- Be responsible for the Quality Management System and reporting.
- Supervise all functions needed to prepare metal for casting and pouring
- Ensure all OH&S policies and procedures are being adhered to by your team
- Liaising with Foundry Manager and Team Leaders to set production priorities.
- Ensure equipment and prestart check are carried out.
- Other day to day tasks required in production.
Successful applicants will need to possess:
- Previous experience in foundry operation.
- Metallurgical qualification or similar.
- Understanding and maintenance of quality systems
- Problem solving ability.
- Good communication verbal and written.
- A motivated attitude and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work with and develop a team.
- Be physically fit for manual work.
On the job training is provided
.
Hours of work:
- 38 hrs available per week.
- Working hours between 6am and 4pm Monday to Thursday.

As a foundry worker, you will play a key role in the production of high-quality cast bronze, aluminium and brass products ranging from plaques to crests and coats of arms.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain foundry equipment, including furnace, sand moulding equipment, and casting tools.
- Melt and pour metals into sand moulds to create products in accordance with specifications.
- Perform tasks such as finishing, grinding, colouring and polishing castings.
- Ensure products meet quality standards and perform necessary quality checks.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment, following all safety protocols.
- Assist with inventory management and material handling as required.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in similar foundry work is a must
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and handle heavy materials.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Ability and willingness to assist in other areas of our production team when not casting
- A commitment to safety and quality standards.

THE ROLE:

- Oversee the management of Foundry in accordance with the Business Line Strategy and industry best practices.
- Provide strategic direction and set KPIs for Foundry.
- Financial responsibility for the foundry including budgeting and cost/margin development.

- Ensure quality of product, market acceptable lead times and delivery reliability from the foundry.

- Development and adequate training of all members of the teams.
- Ensure internal quality processes are clearly outlined, understood and adhered to by all personnel.
- Work with and assist the Market Area Technical Sales Support and estimation team as required to ensure correct casting costs are maintained in estimates.
- Prepare and submit reports as required & requested.
- Attend meetings and provide input as appropriate.
TO SUCCEED:
To be successful in this role the successful candidate will ideally have the following;
- Relevant qualification (Diploma or Cert IV Frontline Management or sufficient relevant experience) and Trade Certificate or other relevant qualifications.
- Commercial understanding
- Financial knowledge and running a P&L
- Extensive experience in Foundry/pyrometallurgical operations, and 3 years’ experience in a similar role/level
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships internally and externally at all levels.
- Effective planning and organisational skills.
- Sound communication skills.
- A strong commitment to ensuring that all internal & external customers are delivered excellent service.
- Must have current motor vehicle license.
- Must be able to pass medical and drug and alcohol tests, which are conducted from time to time.

JOB ENTAILS:
- Produce moulds and cores using boxed and boxless moulding techniques
- Select appropriate moulding boxes for the casting to be produced and report any defects in equipment
- Operate sand mixing machinery
- Ensure patterns are of a sufficient quality to produce the required casting and report any defects that may have a detrimental effect on the finished product
- Form part of the casting team and assist with the movement of molten metal and the casting of moulds and understand the basic principles of metallurgy
- Ensure the correct use and maintenance of protective clothing and equipment supplied
- Perform all tasks with due regard to health and safety and keep all working areas tidy
- Any tasks within the knowledge and responsibility level of the post
SKILLS REQUIRED
- To be a trade qualified Moulder or have 4 years foundry experience demonstrating the following skills
- To understand the principles of running and feeding systems and apply this to the moulding process to ensure sound castings
- To have a basic understanding of mould coating technology and all mould finishing operations
- To be able to understand engineering drawings relevant to the process
- Operate overhead cranes and all lifting equipment in a safe manner
